This document explains what you should do with your Mac computer before returning it to the Corp IT team.
This process needs to be done when you return it to the IT team due to you receiving a new computer, leavening the company or when you have bought your own computer from GreenIT.
If you intend to keep working at kry but from a different device, please contact askIT.
If you do not intend to keep working at kry we ask that you do not preform a full machine back up before wiping this machine. If you have something stored on the computer you wish to save, please transfer it off the computer using another storage device such as a USB or send it to the cloud (personal google drive).
Note: At the end of this process the computer will be wiped and all your local files will be permanently erased. If you wish to save anything please do so before continuing this guide.
- If you are using OS X Mojave or earlier, sign out of iTunes by opening iTunes and from the menu bar at the top of the screen, click Account > Authorizations > De-authorize this computer.
- Sign out of iCloud
-
- If you are using OS X Catalina or earlier, go to the Apple menu at the top left > System preferences > Apple ID. Select Overview in the sidebar and then click on Sign Out. When asked if you want to keep a copy of your iCloud data on this Mac, you can click on whatever because you will erase your Mac later anyway.

- Next up is resetting NVRAM. This process differs for intel processor and M1 processor macbooks. If you are unsure if you have a intel or M1 processor, please look at this guide.
- If you have a MacBook with an M1 processor you can skip this step.
- If you have a MacBook with an intel processor, you need to reset NVRAM by doing this: First you need to shut down your computer. Then, turn it on and immediately press and hold Option + Command + P + R for about 20 seconds. If done correctly the apple loading bar will not appear and the computer will be frozen on the apple logo for a few seconds. Afterwards it will reboot and you should hear the start up noise. This means the process is complete.
-
This step is optional: If you have Bluetooth devices connected to your computer you might need to unpair them. To do this, go to Apple menu > System preferences > Bluetooth. Move your pointer over the device you want to unpair and click remove (x).
- This is the point of no return in this guide. Please make sure you have your files saved that you wish to keep.
- First we will erase the hard drive by using Disk Utility. To access this feature, shut down your computer and turn it back on while pressing and holding Command + R. If successful you will see the Apple logo, a spinning globe, or a loading bar that doesn't move. This screen differs on system per system but if you get to the apple log in screen you were not successful and need to try again.
- The computer will ask for the password to one of the computers accounts, this is the same password that you log in to the computer with. Afterwards you should see the the macOS Utilities window, click on Disk Utility and then Continue.
- At the top of the screen select View > Show All Devices (shortcut: ⌘2). Mark the disk that is on top of the list (as seen in the left of the image below) and then click on Erase in the top menu. In the Name field, type "clean mac HD". Choose the Format APFS and for Scheme, choose GUID Partition Map. Click on Erase and enter your Apple ID if prompted.
- Once erasing is completed, quit the Disk Utility window by pressing the (x). This should bring you back to the macOS utilities screen from step 8.
- From the utilities menu, select "reinstall macOS" and follow the instructions. Once you see a window asking about your preferred language, do not continue! You are done and can press Command + Q to shut down the computer. Now it is ready to be used by someone else.
If you have any questions about any of these steps, please submit a ticket.
